Yesterday the harddisk of one of our firewalls died. After replacing the disk I was curious to see why the old one failed. Look at the pictures and you will understand why the firewall had a tough time booting from it...
See? No data. (The "texture" on the disk surface is just the mirror image of the office ceiling.)
All the magnetic coating has been wiped away over time. It's spread over the casing and stuck in the filter.
The slip of paper with the barcode is just to demonstrate how transparent the disk is.
